About Our Religious Education Program
On the lips of the catechist the first proclamation must ring out over and over: “Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you.”
St. Columbkille’s Religious Education Program endeavors to form into practicing and faith-filled Catholics our parish’s children and teenagers. Mindful that parents/guardians are their children’s first and primary faith formators, our catechists provide age-appropriate instruction that prepares children and teenagers to receive the Sacraments and develop their own personal relationship with God.
The Program is designed for children in kindergarten through grade 10 who have been baptized.
The Program’s overview is as follows:
- Children in grades 1 & 2 prepare for First Communion.
- Children in grades 3 through 8 continue their religious education formation; for children in grades 6 through 8, this education includes exploration of some of life’s most important questions.
- Teenagers in grades 9 & 10 prepare for Confirmation; this preparation includes formation that is designed to both inspire teens intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually and call them to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.
Classes for grades kindergarten through grade 8 occur on Sunday mornings from 10:45 to 11:45 AM (beginning on Sunday, October 4, 2015). Classes for grades 9 and 10 occur on Sunday mornings from 11AM to 12:30 PM (beginning on Sunday, October 11, 2015).
All classes occur at the St. Columbkille Partnership School.
As noted above, the required preparation period for both First Communion and Confirmation is 2 years. Preparation for First Communion and Confirmation need not be age or grade specific. However, children typically prepare for these Sacraments during the grades noted above.
Teens and children who have not been baptized and who are 7 years of age or older may enroll in the Children’s Catechumenate (RCIC). These children/teenagers attend religious education classes with their peers but also receive specialized instruction about Baptism and Communion.
St. Columbkille provides for the religious education of children and teens who may require special education services. These classes begin on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 4:15 PM in the St. Columbkille Partnership School, and meet thereafter on the first Thursday of each month.Religious Education Announcements and Events
