Lent 2016

It is hard to believe that Lent is upon us, but since Easter is early this year (March 27) Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday, February 10. The rules for fasting and abstinence from meat are noted in our bulletin. Recently, I read an article from long ago about the physical benefits of fasting which is often recommended in the bible from a spiritual perspective. Dr. Paul Dudley White was a famous heart specialist in the 1950's and 60's. He was famous for treating President Eisenhower (1952-60) when he had a heart attack during his presidency.

In a speech that he gave in New York City many years ago, Dr. White said "Our ancestors realized that fasting was not only good for the soul, but also for the body. Fasting never hurt anybody. On the contrary, it is most beneficial for many." Fasting from a spiritual perspective is not dieting. It is a discipline that makes us focus on what we do not need in the hope of focusing on people in need. However, the benefits can be both spiritual and physical. So as we move forward into Lent this week, let us all do our best to follow the wisdom of the ages in tempering our material desires and focusing on our spiritual growth.
