Under the huge oak tree in the yard, my 5-year-old niece was shocked to discover that the huge tree had begun as a small acorn, just like one of many she found on the ground. She could not believe that something so large began as something so small.

Crowds of people wanted to hear what Jesus had to say. When He taught, Jesus used parables to explain spiritual realities that are difficult to grasp. But their everyday experiences provided vivid images to explain things they could not see. Seed needs good soil to grow; so does the Word of God need good soil—us—for it to grow.

People will often express a desire to have greater faith or trust in God. Somehow more is better and even necessary for it to ‘work.’ Looking for ways to find more faith, people will overlook the fact that what they have is enough. Prayer, practice and patience will allow the seeds of faith to grow, becoming stronger and deeper each day. Then, one day we can say with Paul, that I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.
